CHAPTER 28

Cam

Inside the hangar, Cam roughly flipped the couch over, reached under, and retrieved his battle equipment. Without a word, he spun on a heel and marched out the hangar door, turning to his left and continuing down the alley toward the airport runway. Jen grabbed her pack, urging the kids to bring their own small packs as they struggled to gather their belongings and follow Cam.

“Cameron,” Jen called out as her husband outpaced his family with apparently no concern whether they kept stride with him or not. When he didn’t respond, she stopped. “Cameron Griffin!” she shouted, her voice loud and full of motherly authority.

Throwing his head back, Cam stopped and turned slowly, spreading his hands in question.

“Slow down and wait a minute. They’re kids,” she snapped, her eyes blazing in fiery anger.

“Things are different. I need everyone to move faster, think smarter, and be ready for the worst—at all times,” he shot back, refusing to relent.

Jen helped Layla with her pack, but shot Cam a look that told him she wasn’t happy with this sudden and dark change that was seeping into the way he interacted with his family.

Colton waited next to Cam, shifting uncomfortably from one foot to the other until Jen and the kids gathered the last of their belongings and scuttled in Cam’s direction.

Once Cam’s family was moving, he pivoted and proceeded to the end of the alley. Without stopping, he pressed forward across one of the taxiways. He didn’t stop until they reached the fence line, keeping a blistering pace, but one he knew his kids could sustain, at least for a short time. He quickly cut a three-foot slit in the chain link and motioned everyone through before he crouched and wriggled through the opening.

On the other side, he glanced toward the ranch they’d stopped at earlier, and a snarl curled at the corners of his mouth. He was finished trusting anyone other than a very select few within his inner circle. No one else knew he and his family were at the airport, which made the old man from the ranch, along with his migrant ranch hands, suspects. If he found out someone was informing, he’d kill them, plain and simple. It was an act akin to treason and, in his opinion, punishable by death. Whoever passed on the information about him and his family’s location and plans took from them the possibility of returning home.

He took one last look toward the ranch, knowing if he’d been out by himself, there was a good chance he’d have snuck onto the property and killed every single one of the men on Clay’s property. Cam was wrapped in a darkness he couldn’t remember ever feeling. It held him in its icy clutches and gave him a newfound purpose. If he were to secure the survival of his family, he’d be required to be a different man, a meaner and less forgiving man.

Cam drove the group hard for more than an hour before stopping and ordering his kids to drink water.
